Massage an introduction

Massage is one of the oldest therapies in the World. Rooted in the beliefs and rituals of ancient civilisations, it is also a growing therapy of today and a way forward for sustained wellbeing for the future. It has long been associated with divinity and culture. Hippocrates (who is so often known as the father of modern medicine) advocated daily massage in the pursuit of well-being and outstanding fitness. The athletes of ancient Greece incorporated massage into their pursuit of physical excellence . The Navaho Indians would massage their warriors before and after they went into battle - using oils to calm and energise the body.

The beliefs of the ancient World are not frozen in time. Stress, eyestrain, insomnia, tense shoulders and fatigue are often associated with our daily way of life. Poor posture, over training in the gym, physical exercise and high-powered careers, can take their toll on the body’s balance and well being.

Massage is a safe and effective way of dealing with these - and with their excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology your therapist will help to also raise self-esteem and mental clarity, increase flexibility, detox the body , improve flexibility, improve sleep and relieve stress.

Massages are tailor made to suit your individual requirements. A holistic view of the body is taken which means the body is treated as a whole stimulating the lymphatic system and boosting the circulation.

Therapeutic and Deep Tissue Massage

Soft tissue massage manipulates the skin and superficial muscles to alleviate pain and tension; enhancing the circulatory system. Calming the nervous system and the mind , providing a restful state of mind. Soft tissue massage is a massage in its own right. It can also form the basis for deep tissue massage which restores structural balance to the body maintaining elasticity and body suppleness. It releases repressed emotions and breaks down any chronic tension in the body.

The therapist will work using forearms, hands , thumbs, elbows to break down the tension which straight-jackets the body restricting its movement. Anyone requiring high maintenance massage (those involved in physical activity, especially sports, and also those who are involved in stressful careers) benefit immensely from deep tissue massage.

Indian Head Massage

The ancient art of head massage is not restricted just to the head. It incorporates the neck and shoulders. It is a great stress buster and is ideal for the work environment as it can be successfully carried out over clothes without the use of oils so there is no need to undress.

Hot Stone Massage

This dates back over 3000 years. It involves the use of volcanic, basalt rocks. These stones are warmed and applied to the body for a therapeutic treatment that works deep into the muscles to provide outstanding relaxation and works successfully on areas requiring deeper work. As with deep tissue massage, the treatment will relax you and also release toxins from the body.
